You are driving down th estreet.Suddenly, you see red and white lights flashing, coming toward you quickly. You hear the siren blaring and pull over to the side. And as the vehicle passes, you notice that the Brentwood Legion Ambulance is off again to help someone in distress.
The Brentwood Legion Ambulance is a volunteer ambulance corps whose headquarters is located at 29 Third Avenue. It serves a district of
23 square miles and 23,000 families in Brentwood and North Bay Shore.Included in this area are the Brentwood School District.the Brentwood Public Library,St.Joseph's Parochial School,C.W. Post,
Suffolk Community College, threee major highways, recreational facilities, and many businesses. The BLA answers over 6,000 calls each year,on its own and to help the Brentwood Fire Department.
BLA was the brainchild of William J.A.Seymour.In March 1959,Mr.Seymour was the only survivor of a serious Brentwood car crash.Badly injured,he had to wait nearly two hours for an ambulance,
since Brentwood did not have one of its own at the time.He was furious,
and became determined to do something about it.Seymour was a member of the Brentwood Legion Joseph Loeffler Post 1006,and he sought their help.Through his efforts, the Legion secured a 1948 Cadillac hearse and had it converted to an ambulance while providing
training for 25 volunteers. When this was completed, the BLA went into service. It has since grown to include over 250 members and five modern ambulances. It has provided assistance in such crises as the Ross Nursing Home fire;the LIRR derailment;the brush fire near Edgewood Hospital;and even a fire in its own building.
