Brentwood Legion AmbulanceThis is a featured page

The Brentwood Legion Ambulance is located at 29 Third Avenue.I t is a volunteer ambulance corps that serves a distance of 23 square miles and 23,000 families in Brentwood and North Bay Shore. It answers over 6,000 calls each year. The BLA was the brainchild of William J.A.Seymour,the badly injured sole survivor of a serious March 1959 Brentwood car crash. He waited nearly two hours for an ambulance, since Brentwood did not have one.Mr.Seymour was determined to do something about this. He sought out fellow members of the Brentwood Legion Joseph Loeffler Post 1006. Throguh his efforts, they purchased a 1948 Cadillac hearse and converted it into an ambulance while training 25 volunteers. The BLA was on its way,and it has since grown to over 250 members and five modern ambulances. Among the crises in which the BLA has provided assistance are the Ross Nursing Home fire;the LIRR derailment;the brush fire near Edgewood Hospital;and the October 1994 gasoline tanker accident on the LIE.
