Katherine H. Doering was born in Brooklyn around 1893 and attended school in Brooklyn. In 1914 the family moved to Brentwood, NY. The first job that Katherine had was working at the Central Islip State Hospital for $19.00 per month. On June 18, 1934 she was appointed the Postmaster of the Brentwood Post Office by President Franklyn D. Roosevelt. During the war she supervised the military post offices at General Mason Hospital in Edgewood and a branch post office at the Pilgrim State Hospital. As Post Master, Katherine worked hard on increasing the staff from one to five personnel, the office was upgraded to class two, and she introduced plans for house to house delivery during her appointment. On July 1, 1955, Katherine moved her staff and equipment into a new facility across from the fire department. This facility would allow for house to house delivery. Katherine H. Gallagher was married to Charles Gallagher and resided on Fifth Avenue near Brentwood Road. Katherine and her husband, had one child, Charles who was born in Brentwood in 1923. She had one grandchild by the name of Patricia Katherine Gallagher. --M. Koferl--Local History Newsletter--August 2008
